30th Anniversary - Junior Fun Day (1st Jul 2012)

On Sunday 1^st July 2012, Thanet Roadrunners AC held a “Fun Day” at the Marlowe Academy to celebrate 30 years since the club’s formation in 1982. Mike Sharpe captured much of the action and his superb photographs accompany this report.

There were races over distances from 50m to 2000m, with lots of TRAC junior members taking part, along with their younger brothers and sisters. Several parents were even tempted into their running shoes to get involved and relive former glories, real or imagined!

The field events on offer were very much “non standard” fare, comprising the Wellington Boot Throw and the Tug-of-War. There was also a rare opportunity in these days of obsessive Health & Safety regulations to tackle the Sack Race. Despite multiple fallers, several within inches of the finish line, thankfully nobody was injured and Derek’s ambulance – in attendance throughout the afternoon, just in case – wasn’t needed after all!

The heavy showers that punctuated the afternoon’s action may have temporarily dampened a few spirits… but the free burgers – sponsored by the club and speedily served up in the EKSS bar – certainly raised them once again! Next Monday, 16^th July 2012, provides another opportunity for the juniors to test themselves on the track. The club is holding a closed meeting for junior TRAC members, with races over standard track distances up to 800m. This replaces the usual Monday evening training session and all junior members are invited to compete. The scheduled start time is 18:00.
