Kent Coastal Marathon and Half-Marathon

Fosters Law Kent Coastal Marathon and Half Marathon 2016 (4th Sep 2016)

Location: Palm Bay School, Cliftonville CT9 3PP

Start time: 9:30

Host: TRAC

26 miles and 385 yard and 13 mile 192.5 yard distance races available. Both races are BARR Gold Standard accredited, and the Half distance has been voted in the UK's top 100 races by Women's Running Magazine for the last three years. Race licence: 2016-26163

The races will be run under UK Athletics rules. UKA Race licence: applied for. The minimum age 18 on day of race for Marathon, and age 17 for Half-Marathon. Thanet Roadrunners AC accepts entries from disabled athletes; please contact the race director in advance to discuss their needs and the requirements. Both races will have chip timing, and baggage storage, while post-race physio will be on hand to work those aching limbs.

For the first time, we will also have pacers for the half marathon, aiming to get you round in 1hr 45mins, 2hrs or 2hrs 15mins. We have some brilliant drumming music provided by Rich Rhythms  www.richrhythms.co.uk. At the start-finish area, we will have a smoothie van, coffee and burgers and have applied for a bar licence. Plus we have our usual selection of nutty signs.  Watch out for ‘Run like the police are chasing you', just outside Margate police station.

Please note: In line with current BARR and UKA guidelines, IPod and MP3 players will be BANNED during this race. Please do not enter the race and then decide to run with headphones or earphones – you will be disqualified, and it may mean the race will not go ahead in future years. Runners in the full marathon should aim to complete within 6 hours – support may be reduced after this time. Any runner reaching half way after 2hrs 50mins may be withdrawn.

PRIZE MONEY IS OFFERED TO THE FIRST MALE AND FEMALE FINISHERS - £75 to the marathon winners and £50 to the half marathon winners. In addition, there will be awards for second and third male and female runners, and also for first placed teams and first placed runners in age group categories for both full and half marathon races. Presentations will take place after the race at 12pm for the half marathon and 1.30pm for the marathon. All finishers will receive a race medal, a technical T-shirt and a goody bag.

Supporters

We would like to extend our thanks to the following people and organisations, without whom the race would not take place:

  • Fosters Law Solicitors who have supported this event for several years and.
  • Fujifilm Specialist Ink Systems in Broadstairs, who are a major local employer
  • Thanet District Council
  • Thanet Constabulary - for their help and guidance
  • RAYNET - for their excellence and communications experience
  • The Margate Ambulance services - without whose help we could not stage this event
  • Local scout groups - for manning the water stations
  • The myriad of helpers and marshals - who all give up their time voluntarily to ensure all goes smoothly. Please be nice to them out on the route – without them you would not have a race – any runner who is rude to a marshal may well be barred from future races.

Race Charity

We will once again donate at least £1 from each entry fee to local charity. This year we will be supporting the Margate Ambulance Corps (charity no 270595) who have been serving the local community since 1880.  Without their support many local events would be unable to survive.  Our club president Derek Sackett reached the ‘big 70’ this year and is an active member of the Corps.  It seemed fitting we give something back to this great group of people who have supported us, looking after our runners for years.

Race Photographs

Jodi Hanagan will be on hand taking race photographs around the course. You will be able to download or order prints through her website (www.jodihanaganphotography.com) shortly after the event.

Race Results

The race will be chip timed by UK Sports Timing, so please collect your chip from race HQ (Palm Bay School, Cliftonville, CT9 3PP) between 7.30 and 9.15 on race day. Results will be available on their website (www.uksportstiming.co.uk/) shortly after the race.

Course Map and Profile

The course will follow the same route as used since 2012. The race HQ will be Palm Bay School in Cliftonville, and the race will start with a loop around Palm Bay before following a largely coastal route through Broadstairs towards Ramsgate, heading back to complete the half marathon at Cliftonville. Those running the marathon then continue through Margate, again largely along the coast, before turning at Minnis Bay and heading back to finish at Palm Bay School. The course profile, from a recent Garmin trace, is at the bottom of the page, with the full course map.
