Larkfield 10k 2012 (20th May 2012)

Start time: 10.--

Location: East Malling Research Centre

Host: Larkfield AC

Sunday 20th May saw the Larkfield 10k, the 6th leg of the Kent Grand Prix series, as well as incorporating the Kent 10K Championships. The race was fully subscribed with all 500 places being sold, which included 14 Thanet Roadrunner AC members amongst the 443 finishers. Andy Stevens was the first Thanet Roadrunner AC home in a fantastic time of 37:22 ahead of Chris Brenchley in 2nd place and Steve King in 3rd place. The first Thanet Roadrunner AC lady was Becky Williams who made a winning return in a time of 45:56 in her first 10k race after having to drop out of last week’s Deal Half Marathon due to illness. Second lady was Sarah Harmes in 48:44 just ahead of Debbie Hatt in 49:00. In the middle of the field Stephen Forshaw 44:09 led a Thanet Roadrunners AC group finish ahead of Steve Clarke 44:37 who overtook Ed Heardman 44:38 and John Cooper 44:41 just before the finish line. There were some excellent times recorded by other Thanet Roadrunner AC members. John Cooper recorded his fastest time for the distance since July 2005, despite having been working nights and finishing work at 7am. Stephen Forshaw and Debbie Hatt’s both set new 10k personal bests. Congratulations to all of the team for another great performance.

We’ll have the updated Club Championship and Grand Prix standings later in the week, but I reckon the men have broken 400 points, and although Pam narrowly missed out, Sarah and Debbie once again have picked up points for the fairer sex.

Thanks to Chris Brenchley for the photos on the race page, and Oli Cooper has also put some on the Facebook page.

After Sunday’s Larkfield 10k and the Deal Half Marathon the week before, the men’s team has moved up to 5th in the Kent Grand Prix whilst a strong showing from the home side at Deal has seen the ladies’ just drop back to 8th.

In the individual tables, a number of members picked up points at both venues, and Andy Stevens now sits in an excellent 8th place, with Chris Brenchley and Steve King also in the top 25. Chris also opened his v40 account very well, and is the second TRACcie in the top 25, behind Steve. John Cooper and Steve Clarke have both got off the mark in the v50, whilst Terry Brightwell and Bill Wright continue to pick up points in the v60. Sarah Harmes is highest ranked lady in 21st, but Debbie Hatt, Becky Williams and Pam Philpot all picked up points over the last fortnight.

In the club championships, Andy and Sarah still lead the way, having completed the maximum six scoring races, so now will need to better their previous performances to add to their tally. They’re both in good position though, having dropped only 4 and 5 points respectively.

The v50 is the most closely contested category, with John Cooper a single point ahead of Steve Clarke, but the v40 is shaping up as well. Stephen Forshaw has moved to the top of the chart, but has raced once more than both Steve King and Chris Brenchley, who are separated by only three points with two races still to score, with Nick Lever only four points further back. Bill Wright is still picking up points to head the v60. Overall, only three points cover 2nd to 5th.

In the ladies’, Becky Williams’ win keeps the pressure on Gen Holden, Sarah heads Debbie Hatt in the v35 and overall, and Pam Philpot leads the v45 and has moved into 3rd place overall with her fourth scoring run.

Plenty still to play for in the Club Champs as more members start to reach the six races, and both teams are doing really well in the Grand Prix - make sure you get your entry in for the Harvel 5 mile, on Saturday 2nd June. Once again, please let us know if you need a hand with travel, or place a message on the forum, and we’ll see what we can arrange.
