Sunday saw the 2nd race in a busy month for organising club Thanet Roadrunners AC with the running of the multi-terrain Quicksands 15. Conditions were tough for runners with a strong sun and wind to contend with over the whole course.

The race starts on Margate main sands and winds its way to Ramsgate and back going up and down from cliff top to beach as often as possible and has a 3-hour cut off due to the incoming tide! It is a race where personal bests and worsts count for little since although the course doesn’t change from year to year, the conditions underfoot are highly dependent on recent prevailing weather conditions and tides and the course never runs the same as the previous year. One runner commented that the 15 miles here felt more like 18 – 20 miles in an ordinary road race.

This year’s race was won by Stephen Cable of Istead & Ifield in 1 hour 40 minutes and 42 seconds and he finished more than 4 minutes ahead of 2nd placed Daniel Green (Ashford & District 1;44:57) and Thanet Roadrunner’s Frank Flint (1:45:26).

The ladies’ category of the race was won by Sevenoaks AC’s Heather Fitzmaurice in 1:53:30 and like the men’s winner she had a comfortable winning margin over 2nd placed Canterbury Harrier Sarah Maguire who dropped in under the 2-hour mark in 1:59:02

Thanet Roadrunners had a large number of runners in the field and had further success in the team event when winning with a team comprising Flint, Chris Caps (4th 1:45:48) and Gary Salmon (6th 1:49:44). Flint was the 1st TRAC man home and the first TRAC lady was Sharon Coughlan in 2:33:02. Helen Langsmead kindly acted as Tail End Charlie for the day and spent the first part accompanying some Korean entrants who finished comfortably despite not having realised the race was mainly on the beach!

The next Thanet Roadrunners AC Event is the Thanet 10 (mile) in December which is celebrating its 25th running. Entry forms can be downloaded from www.thanetroadrunners.org.uk
