Caring for Connor - Fighting against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)

On 29 March 2013, a blood test revealed Connor had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). A progressive muscle wasting disease that has no treatments, no cure and is 100% fatal. Connor is a gentle 7 year old boy who lives in Westgate on sea, Kent. He looks normal at the moment but inside every muscle is slowly wasting away. He has no idea of the extent of his condition. Duchenne will firstly take his ability to walk, being confined to a power wheelchair by age 10. Eventually this weakness spreads to the arms, neck, and other areas. Symptoms include heart failure, abnormal bone development that lead to skeletal deformities, including curvature of the spine, the use of a ventilator and many more problems along the way. Due to progressive deterioration of muscle, loss of movement occurs, eventually leading to total paralysis. The average life expectancy for patients afflicted with DMD is around 20 years old. The Caring for Connor Campaign are fundraising ultimately for a treatment or a cure for Duchenne but Connor will also need a lot of equipment if a treatment isn’t found so want to make sure money is there to fund a power wheelchair, hoist or anything he needs when the time comes

The Race

Please note: NO HEADPHONES may be worn during the event by competitors. Please do not enter the race and then decide to run with headphones. This may mean the race will not be able to be run in future years. This will be enforced and appropriate action will be taken against any runner not complying, including disqualification.

The race will be chip timed by UK Sports Timing. Please collect your chip from race HQ (The Boating Pool, Royal Esplanade, Ramsgate, CT11 0HE) between 7.30 and 9.15 on race day. Results will be available shortly after the race, on the following website -

Our main race sponsors are Oakwood Homes, to whom we are extremely grateful for their support. Many thanks to the following people and organisations, without whom the race would not take place:

§  Thanet District Council

§  Adrian Smith Associates Ltd

§  Thanet Constabulary - for their help and guidance

§  Raynet - for their excellence and communications experience

§  The Margate Ambulance services - without whose help we could not stage this event

§  The myriad of helpers and marshals - who all give up their time voluntarily to ensure all goes smoothly. Please be nice to them out on the route – without them you would not have a race – any runner who is rude to a marshal may well be barred from future races.
