Training & Competition Calendar

Thanet Roadrunners AC welcomes new junior members of any ability throughout the year. There is no obligation to compete. If you just want to run for fun, or to improve your fitness, that’s fine.

Contact us to attend a taster training session. You can become a club member later on if you decide to join. Membership forms are always available at training sessions, and there are more details on this page.

Annual Membership of Thanet Roadrunners AC is currently £4 for a Junior member (under 16). Family Membership (for two adults + up to three children) is £24. There is a £2 training fee for each session you attend in the sportshall or on the track.

For certain competitions you will also need to be an England Athletics member, which costs £10.

TRAC Juniors’ Training and the Competition Year

At training, athletes are placed in suitable groups and are encouraged to warm up thoroughly before the main session. Sessions are structured and will include drills to prepare the child for more efficient running and sometimes other exercises to strengthen the body for more effective performance. It is important that each child participates fully and comes to the session ready to concentrate.

The competition year is roughly divided into two parts:

April to September: Track & Field season (races take place on 400m – often ‘all weather’ – running tracks.)

October to March: Cross Country season (races are run over natural surfaces and are generally longer. You may encounter hills, mud and even snow at times!)

Training is adjusted during the year to reflect the needs of junior athletes preparing for competitions.

With the Track & Field season just starting, track sessions are currently emphasising speed. Once the focus switches back towards Cross Country preparation, greater emphasis will be placed on endurance.

Road races for Juniors take place throughout the year. They are run on tarmac or paved surfaces, often on seafront promenades. Many are held just before a major road race for Senior runners.

If you would like further details about competitions, please speak to the coaches at training.
