Juniors on the National Stage

The Saucony English National Cross Country Championships returned to the North East for the first time since 2007 on Saturday 23rd February 2013. Herrington Park, Sunderland was the venue, similar in some respects to our local Fowlmead Country Park in that it was landscaped over a former colliery as part of a government-funded regeneration scheme.

The wintry forecast which kept numerous highly-ranked athletes away did not put off two hardy Thanet Roadrunners AC representatives and they were confronted, as expected, by icy winds and snow falling during their races.

In the U13 Girls' race, over a 3KM course, Emily Bond finished 57th of the 264 runners in 12:56, a minute and a half behind the winner, Katy Ann McDonald of Herne Hill Harriers. Emily - running at the top of the age category this year - was 85th in the corresponding race at Parliament Hill in 2012.

Oliver Cooper contested the 4.5KM U15 Boys' race, coming 148th of the 223 competitors in 18:30. The race was won by Daniel Evans of Warrington AC in an impressive 15:02.

The 2014 venue is yet to be confirmed, but is sure to be much further South. Hopefully this will encourage more TRAC members to take part in the English Nationals.
