Looking Back at the Fosters Law Kent Coastal Marathon & Half Marathon 2013

This year’s Fosters Law Kent Coastal Marathon & Half Marathon held on Sunday 1st September 2013 had near perfect running conditions bar a head wind for returning marathon runners. The event organised by Thanet Roadrunners AC was a sell out with the highest number of total finishers which included 344 finishers in the half marathon and 220 finishers in the marathon.

Both races took in the picturesque coastline of Thanet taking in the coastal towns of Margate, Broadstairs & Ramsgate. Showing the mixture of participants taking part, there were athletes running their first marathon/half marathon, charity runners and experienced runners from the 100 Marathon Club to those. Most notable runners this year included blind multi-marathon runner Paul Watts, very fitting with our main race charity the Kent Association for the Blind. We also had TV presenter Kaddy Lee-Preston continue her training for her trek up Kilimanjaro later this year by tackling our half marathon, David Drozdziak who is aiming for 52 half marathons this year raising money for Basic Foundations, and with the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who this year, Emma Woolerton completed 10 of 11 races dressed as the 11th Doctor for Marillac hospice care!

Robert Knight won the half marathon in 1.20.08, a minute clear of Jamie Smalley of Serpentine RC (1.21.06), with Liz Weeks from Sittingbourne Striders (1.22.01) doing the girls proud another minute back in 3rd overall. The third male finisher was Thomas Newman in 1.23.15. London Heathside’s Elspeth Storrar (1.31.13) was female runner-up for the second consecutive year, a minute ahead of Sarah-Anne Mooney of Larkfield AC (1.32.22).

In the marathon both male and female winners were well over clear of the pack, by an impressive 10 minutes. Daniel Watt of Tunbridge Wells Harriers claimed the win, finishing in 2.45.47, ahead of second placed Stuart Wright (unattached, 2.56.21). Stuart pipped last year’s winner Riel Carol who was over two minutes quicker than last year, but found this year’s field too hot to handle! Heather Fisher had a successful trip down from Sheffield to claim the ladies’ prize in 3.22.12, with Sheen Shufflers’ Cathryn Simpson second in 3.32.45 and Sarah Maguire of Canterbury Harriers in third with 3.34.10.

As with all Thanet Roadrunner AC races, part of the entry fee is given to charity. This year’s official charity was The Kent Association for the Blind (http://www.kab.org.uk ) who support sight impaired people so that they can live independent lives. As a result of the large number of entries, the charity will receive a donation of £700.

Mark Perkins, Thanet Roadrunners Chairman said, 'The Fosters Law Kent Coastal Marathon & Half Marathon is a huge event for the club and involves huge support from sponsor, club members and supporting organisations. What makes it a special marathon is the fantastic scenery and the near legendary support of the marshals and spectators. The marshals are all club runners and local residents and care that the race works like clockwork that the runners get the support they need and the spectators enjoy themselves'.

'The weather was fantastic, although a little blowy for the marathon runners but the fact that we had such a mixture of runners taking part including inspirational athletes, charity runners, even a TV Presenter and Time Lord, made it just so enjoyable! '

We hope to see as many of the runners again next year, but don’t forget our next races, the Alan Green Memorial 10 mile race on 1st December and our Mountain Bike Duathlon on 12th January 2014’.
