Oasis Domestic Abuse Service Chosen as Recipient Charity for the Alan Green Memorial 10 Mile Race

Oasis Domestic Abuse Service has been chosen as the recipient charity for the Alan Green memorial 10 Mile Road Race which will takes place on December 1st 2013 along the Thanet coast from Westgate Pavilion to Palm Bay.

Oasis Domestic Abuse Service is a registered charity providing temporary and safe refuge accommodation and 24 hour accessibility for families escaping domestic abuse. The charity provides practical and emotional support and information to those affected by domestic abuse in the community, youth mentoring and refuge services.

The service was founded in 1994 and still continued to deliver its work in Thanet and the surrounding areas today nearly 20 years later. The charity delivers several programmes to children and young people in the community, including its successful Love Shouldn’t Hurt campaign in local Thanet primary schools.

The charity has a proven track record of providing excellent support to those experiencing domestic abuse. Those using the charity’s services saw significant reduction in their risk levels. From 2012-13 its refuge supported over 50 women with 35 children, and its Community Team supported 358 adults and 198 children.

Hazel Eddy, Fundraising Assistant for Oasis Domestic Abuse Service said, ‘Being the official charity for the Alan Green memorial 10 Mile Road Race is just brilliant! Raising awareness of our services to the local community is vital. We want people to know that they have a place to turn to for help and advice if they find themselves in an abusive relationship. The more people talk about Oasis the more likely it is that we will reach those that need our help. Being the official charity for the Alan Green Memorial 10 Mile Road Race means there will be more people out there that know of Oasis, and how to access our services if they or someone they know needs to. Money raised will have a huge impact on our work in Thanet enabling us to reach out to more people that need our help. ‘
