Thanet Roadrunners Raise Funds for Margate Ambulance at Westwood Cross Treadmill Challenge

Over 40 members of Thanet Roadrunners Athletics Club took part in a promotional and fundraising event at Westwood Cross on (4th January 2014).  Throughout the day, 36 club members took part in a Treadmill challenge covering the 75 mile distance in 15 minute slots during the shopping centres opening hours.  As a result, the club raised £209.66 for the Margate Ambulance.

Anne Hilton, Training Officer from the Margate Ambulance said,’ The Margate Ambulance provide First Aid and ambulance cover for Thanet community and sporting events.  We are very busy and as a voluntary organisation, reliant on donations.  We are immensely grateful to Thanet Roadrunners for holding this event and raising this total.

Steve Clarke, Vice Chairman of Thanet Roadrunners said, ‘we were invited by Westwood Cross to promote our running club and general health and fitness.  As part of the event we decided to raise money for the Margate Ambulance by having a treadmill at the Community Hub with a view of running 75 miles during the opening hours of the Shopping centre.  We had 36 runners from the club running each 15 minute slots on the treadmill.  We also have a dozen other helpers providing support and answering enquiries from the general public.

So how did the runners get on? Steve said,’ As the name suggests, we are a road running club so some of the runners have found it very strange, but everyone was up for the challenge’.

He added, ‘Thanet Roadrunners we are very much a community based running & athletics club with runners ranging from juniors as young as eight to members well into their sixties and seventies.  Men and women are both well represented and members have a wide variety of backgrounds and other interests.  Members new to running will find our club sessions are inclusive with all training sessions having 1 – 5 groups in order to cater for all abilities.
