Debbie Hatt of Thanet Roadrunners AC Seals first Palace in Inaugural Buttons For Brathay Marathon

Thanet Roadrunners including Sarah Harmes,  Sharon Foster, Helen Langsmead, Debbie Hatt and Mark Foster took part in the inaugural Buttons for Brathay Bells & Whistles race festival which took place in Dover over the weekend of 29th to the 30th March 2014.  To the great delight of the club, Debbie Hatt won the Ladies marathon on the Saturday.

The Buttons for Brathay Bells & Whistles race festival was a running event aimed at a wide athletics audience from experienced multi-racers or novice runners.  The event included back to back marathons on each day as well as a 10K race.  All the races involved running a multi lap course along the Dover Seafront to the Prince of Wales Pier.

On winning the marathon, Debbie said, ‘I was extremely pleased to be the first placed lady on the Marathon on Saturday.  Until last couple of miles I always had two ladies in front of my and didn’t for a second think I would take them.  However, they were struggling slightly more than me at this point and I felt strong and was running consistently so was able to push on past them.  Yes, this is the first time I have ever won an event (and possibly last as it was a small field of runners), but I am enjoying the moment!’

She added,’ Friends and family were there to support me (and a lot of Thanet Roadrunners members) and that made a HUGE difference.  As it was a local race we were able to get them to come down and during the last 4 or so miles I really needed their words of support.  I also pulled strength from remembering all the long and tough training runs I had done.  Noel Sutton, one of the Thanet Roadrunner coaches has coached me over the past months for this race and I knew he was confident of my ability so it was a case of putting it in to practice and really knuckling down.  Having Sarah Harmes to run with the bulk of the race was great support too.’

A huge congratulations from the club to Debbie and the other runners who took part.
