Success for Thanet’s Men at the Harbour Walbanger 7K Beach Race

A bright sunny morning with a softening cool breeze welcomed the runners for the Airport Connections Harbour Wallbanger 7K beach race that took place on Saturday 31st May 2014.  The event, held between the picturesque coastline of Broadstairs and Ramsgate was organised by Thanet Roadrunners AC and saw its largest amount of finishers since the race was re-established in the Kent racing calendar four years ago. 

Over 119 runners complete the course with Thanet Roadrunners AC men taking the main honours.  Owen Mitchell impressively won the men’s race, leading from the start and finishing in 26:16. Victoria Talbot Rosner from Invicta East Kent won the women’s race in 33:54 with Paul Patton of Thanet close behind in second place.  The Thanet men’s team comprising Owen, Chris Brenchley, and John Hunt won the men’s team trophy.The Youngest Male Finisher was Thant Roadrunner, Alfie Grafton with a time of 31.44.  The youngest female finisher was Alice Price with a time of 37:35

Owen Mitchell said, ‘The conditions were perfect, sunny and the sand wasn't too soft. I planned to stay behind the front runner but as no one went off hard from the start this soon changed.’

He added, ‘I am over the moon with my race win and so pleased there were so many successes from Thanet Roadrunners.’

Spencer Hoult, Race Director for the Wallbanger said, ’every year this race gets more popular and I would like to thank our headline Sponsors 'Airport Connections' for supporting this event.  I would like to thank our other supporters Tesco and to the Pavilion in Broadstairs for allowing us to set up our Headquarters on their premises.  I also would like to thank Margate Ambulance for their assistance and all the club volunteers who made it such a great day for the runners.’

The club will now be drawing its attention to organising the Fosters Law Kent Coastal Marathon and Half Marathon that takes place on the 7th September 2014.
