Our Kent Regional Sports Award winners - Thanet Roadrunners AC Juniors and Ben Pond
Last week I was delighted to bring you the news that both our juniors and Ben Pond, both won awards at the Kent Regional News and Media annual Sports Awards ceremony at Eastwell Manor in Ashford. Well I am delighted to bring you further information and pictures from the evening.
Our juniors won ‘Young Team of the Year’ whilst Ben Pond won the top accolade of ‘Sports star of the year.’ Helen Grant, Government Minister for Sport and Tourism and Kent and England U17 cricket star Ryan Davies were on hand to give to out the awards at the ceremony.

Gary Gillatt, Thanet Roadrunners AC Head Coach said, ’I was absolutely thrilled for the juniors, their parents, carers, coaches and everyone else associated with winning these accolades. I believe that this success has been down to the family ethos behind our club…that sport hould be enjoyable and that everyone should respect and look after each other.’
He added, ’a lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes, not only at the club but at home as well. Our juniors and their families make a huge commitment to their athletics, not only in time but also the unforeseen things such as travelling and time away.’
Ben Pond who won ‘Sports Star of the Year’ said, ‘I was very pleased to win the award. Two years ago I was recognised by KRN&M by getting the 'Young Sports Star of the Year when I was just starting out in Modern Pentathlon so to be recognised again this year as 'Sports Star of the Year' is fantastic… especially given the level of the other athletes in my category.’
He added, ‘This year was a breakthrough year for me with my international debut in Birmingham in March followed by various camps and competitions around the world. This was then topped off in July when I was chosen to attend the European championships and along with my teammate Henry Choong was able to secure the gold medal in the men's relay.
‘I would just like to thank whoever nominated me for this award and also thank everyone who took the time to vote for me in this whole process. To get this sort of recognition for doing something I love is really uplifting. ‘
