Report on New Year's day Park Run

A very happy New Year to everyone!

Three club members greeted the arrival of 2011 by running the first Whitstable Park Run of the year. Mark Dawson finished 6th in 24.13 on his first appearance, with Terry Brightwell 3 places behind in 24.09, while Jerry Kelk claimed a new PB of 27.07, good enough for 14th.Jerry Kelk has kindly provided a write up for us, so read on for his take on proceedings!

First parkrun of the year, 8th at Whitstable with 28 runners, 7 of whom are new this week.

TRACcies present for the occasion were Mark Dawson, Terry Brightwell and myself.  A cool 5 degrees prevailed, with a light drizzle which my wife refers to as Cornish mist and a Westerly breeze at exactly my 'race' pace.  I was overdressed as usual, fearing getting cold before the start, so the first (downwind) half of each lap was a severely warm affair, with the back half spent thermally over-compensating.

As usual, I started off much too fast, for which I would pay during the remaining 85% of the race, but I still managed to watch Mark and Terry shrinking into the distance.  Whatever they have for breakfast, I want some.  The back half of the lap includes a gentle upward slope on the grass, for which I obviously need some hill work because it should have been easier.  Heading down the path for lap 2 is probably the best bit, after which several people I had left behind at the start proceeded to pass me, tortoise and hare style.  I must learn to spread my effort more evenly.  I must learn to spread my effort more evenly.  I must...

No matter, I scored a PB.  Being only my second parkrun, it was 50/50 but I'm pleased to achieve the 24 second improvement.  It will be harder next time, of course.  Terry hadn't expected a great time because he was feeling a bit off, though he beat me by two minutes.  Some perspective here: I set a PB yet Terry, my senior, has an off day and still beats me by 2 minutes.  I have some work to do.  Well done Terry.  This was Mark's first outing, so he sets a benchmark for next time.  I'll be back.

Well done all, and thanks very much for this, Jerry!
