Marathon and Half Marathon RESULTS

Many congratulations to all the runners in today’s Kent Coastal Marathon and Half Marathon, and big thanks to all race organisers, marshals and of course our race sponsors and supporters - Foster’s Law; Thanet District Council; Asics; Sweatshop Maidstone; Thanet Constabulary; RAYNET; The Margate Ambulance services; and local scout groups - without which Thanet Roadrunners would not be able to host Kent’s only road marathon. Please could all runners rate the race and leave and comments on Runners World – it helps us and also any prospective runners in the future. This year, and very timely with the Paralympics, blind multi-marathon runner Paul Watts returned to us for a second 26 mile spin around the Thanet coastline. And I hope you took the opportunity to have a photo with the Olympic Torch, carried through Ramsgate by Dean Gough of the Alfie Gough Trust.

Onto the results – there were 311 finishers in the half marathon. Congratulations to Michael Page who won the half marathon in 74.51, just over three minutes clear of Medway and Maidstone’s Anthony Harkin, with John Law of Tunbridge Wells Harriers a further five minutes back in third. Gravesend’s Mel Fisher led the ladies home in 1.24, almost ten minutes clear of London Heathside’s Elspeth Storrar, with another seven minutes to last year’s runner-up, Heather Fisher of Dudley Kingswinford. Heather led a Dudley Kingswinford team of Fishers to the ladies’ team prize, while Paddock Wood claimed the men’s team trophy.

As for the marathon, we had 243 finishers in all categories. A big well done to Riel Carol of Clapham Chasers who won in 2.58.55, just 18 secs ahead of Istead and Ifield’s Raymond Pearce, with Fabrice Klein two minutes back in third, where he also finished last year. With three runners in the first ten male finishers, St/ Albans Striders claimed the men’s team prize. Helen Taranowski of West Four Harriers claimed the ladies’ title, with 3.10.50, seven minutes ahead of Larkfield’s Caroline Terburgh and Lucy Tomlinson of Maidstone Harriers third.  Larkfield AC, also with three finishers in first ten ladies back, beat Maidstone Harriers to the ladies’ team title. Apologies to anyone who was harangued by a cyclist, possibly giving the impression they were part of the marshalling team - rest assured they were not.

Full details are available on the race page.

Hope to see many of you again next year!

For TRAC involvement, six club members ran the half marathon, picking up second spot in the mens’ team……

We’ll have details of the effect on the 2012 Kent Grand Prix and Club Championships hopefully later in the week. I’ll have some photos on the website over the course of the next few days, so do keep an eye on the gallery, as well as the link to the official race photographer as well, so more on that in due course.

As you may be aware, this is Phil Kinnill’s last stint as race director – many thanks for all his sterling efforts over the years to bring us Kent’s only road marathon. Debbie Hatt has already taken the baton, but if anyone would like to be involved behind the scenes for next year’s event, please do drop us a line at webmaster@thanetroadrunners.org.uk – we certainly need someone to handle the entries, as Sharon is also taking a breather next summer, but there are many ways to get involved.
