Fitness League - Nurstead Court (Seniors)

Sunday 15th January 2011, saw the 6th leg of the 2011-12 Kent Fitness Cross Country League take place at the picturesque location of Nurstead Court, Meopham. Despite it being a dry but very cold morning, there was once again a very large field which saw 449 finishers. The race was run over a testing hilly cross country course, where in places the course was slippery in places where the sun had thawed out the deep morning frost. The 5 1/2 mile course was two laps of across a number of fields where horses are normally exercised. As such, there were large sections of the course which were very uneven due to hoof marks. This was made worse by the ground being frozen, making it difficult to gain any advantage by wearing spikes.

Despite this race clashing with our own Duathlon at Minnis Bay, Thanet Roadrunners AC managed to field a full team on the day. The race saw Becky Williams making her cross country debut for Thanet Roadrunners AC ladies’ team, with Anna Gillatt and ladies’ captain Sarah Harmes making up the team. Steve King was once again the first Thanet male home in 60th place subject to confirmation after some confusion in the Finish Funnel which saw Steve not given a finishing ticket. The finish recorders took the name from the runner in front of Steve but failed to give him a number. Steve was given number 59 but being a true sportsman noticed the recorders error and gave his number to the runner in front of him. Steve informed the recorder of their mistake but the unsporting runner behind Steve refused to pass his number onto Steve insisting that as that was the number he was given so he was keeping it. Second home for the men in 192nd place was John Cooper, who switched from doing the Winter Tanners 30 to this race to ensure that the men had a full compliment of runners, after hearing that men’s captain Steve Clarke was unwell on Friday. The men’s Captain Steve Clarke, Graham Pick, Terry Brightwell, Steve Forshaw, Adrian Speller and Mark Chapman completed the men’s team with one spare runner on the day. Thanet Roadrunners AC did however record their best all round performance of the season, with all 11 runners finishing inside the first 300 home.

The final race in the League series is nearer to home when it is held at Rough Common Canterbury on 19th February. The 11th March sees the annual presentations and buffet being held at Nurstead Court, Meopham. Prior to the presentations, there is a cross country relay race which requires teams of 5. The teams can be mixed and can even include juniors. It would be great to see Thanet Roadrunners AC enter 2 or 3 teams in the event, whilst supporting our juniors who will almost certainly finish in the awards for the second year running.

Today’s results have seen Thanet Roadrunners AC ladies remain in 15th place, whilst in the combined league TRAC remain 17th with the men’s team dropping one place from 16th to 17th overall.
