Roadrunners chasing dinosaurs in Deal

Sunday saw the running of the Deal tri Dinosaur 10K, proceeds from which go to the Dermatology Unit of the Kent and Canterbury Hospital.  The course, which is mostly flat, goes along the seafront promenade, with the exception of kilometres 2 – 5 which have some distinct hills in them contributing to breaking up runners’ rhythm at times. Conditions were overcast but surprisingly muggy for a coastal race making dehydration a potential problem for some competitors despite the relatively short distance.

The race was won easily by Michael Coleman of Medway and Maidstone in a time of 32 minutes 15 which put him well ahead of the field – in fact at 2K Coleman already had a substantial lead over a pack of around 8 other runners but as the race entered the last few kilometres that following pack had disintegrated due to the sustained pace.  Tina Oldershaw of Paddock Wood continued her dominance of the women’s field with a fine overall 12th place and 1st lady in a time of 37:10.

1st Thanet Roadrunner home were Dave Bennett in 39:31 (31st place) and Kay Bailey in 50:38 but the club performance of the day was undoubtedly that of Emily Bond who beat the 5-year old 1500m course record in the junior competition finishing in 5 minutes 39 seconds.  This time placed her 4th overall, 1st girl overall and 1st in her age group, beaten only by three older boys, and meant that in turn she finished ahead of all the other competitors including many boys 2 or 3 years older than her.
