Blean Cross Country

Sunday 19th February saw the 7th and final League race for the 2011/12 Kent Fitness Cross Country League being hosted by Canterbury Harriers at Blean Woods, Rough Common, Canterbury. The race started at 1100 am on what can best be described as a dry but cold winter’s morning due to an icy wind on the day. The course started off with 1 1/2 laps of the playing fields before the runners were directed right into Blean Woods and along woodland pathways. The tracks were made up of mud and stones which resulted in the going underfoot being very firm over large sections of the wooded area. The scenic woodland paths were slippery in places as a result of the recently thawed out snow and ice together with the overnight rain. As expected on woodland paths there were a number of tree roots and vegetation protruding from the ground, which did cause problems for a small number of runners who unfortunately fell over, thankfully without sustaining any serious injury. The race once again attracted a good sized field with there being 375 finishers on the day.

Thanet Roadrunners AC was well represented with 13 runners on the day, which meant that we had a team in all categories. Those that run were well supported on the day by team members Sarah Harmes, Noel Sutton, Gary Gillattt and Steve Jones all who were unable to run on the day due to injury or illness. The team were also well supported by the TRAC juniors who raced at 1020 am, their parents and junior team manager Carol Burton. The support and encouragement of you all was very much appreciated not only at this race but through out the entire race series.

The first Thanet runner home in 61st place was Steve King with Becky Williams being the first Thanet lady home finishing in 211th place in only her second cross country race. This race also saw Alex Horsley take part in his first cross country race of the season with Delphi and Nick Lever both making their cross country debuts for Thanet Roadrunners AC. The ladies have used a total of 9 runners this season but disappointingly none of them have completed the required 5 races to qualify for the final league placings. The men have used a total of 21 runners in the season with 7 runners managing to complete the required 5 races to score. Steve King and John Cooper were the only Thanet Roadrunner AC members to compete and finish all 7 cross country races in this year’s league series.

The final league positions are worked out by counting a runners best 5 performance ratings in the series. The performance ratings are worked out on the percentage of the field beaten.

If you can run PLEASE let either Steve Clarke or Sarah Harmes know asap so that they can work out how many teams Thanet Roadrunners AC will be able to enter.

REMEMBER teams can be a mixture of Men, Ladies and Junior runners. This race is followed by the presentation of the League Awards to the winners of the Men’s, Ladies’ and Team Leagues as well as the presentation of the trophies to winners of the junior leagues which will include some of our own juniors picking up awards. The more seniors we have there the more support we can show to our junior athletes for their efforts over this season.

We’ll have the Junior results in due course, and Grant Burton has sent some photos that we’ll have on the site this evening.
