Thanet Gazette - 19th November

With thanks to Jackie, here's the article printed in the latest edition of the Thanet Gazette.

The first weekend of November saw a somewhat blustery and wet renewal of the Deal 5 along the sea front between Deal and Walmer Castle but there was still a goodly turnout of Thanet Roadrunners consisting of 10 seniors and 10 juniors who made the short journey over to race.

The race was won by local Invicta EK runner Chris Holmes whose time of 27 minutes 02 seconds was over a minute faster than 2nd placed runner Mike Mansfield representing Essex club Leigh on Sea Striders.  First lady home was the ever present Tina Oldershaw of Paddock Wood whose 29:56 meant that only 12 men in a field of over 250 managed to beat her home.

For Thanet Roadrunners AC the honours were taken by Daniel Green (15th; 30:16) and Genevieve Holden (68th; 34:59).  In the junior race over 1,000m there were 8 awards up for grabs over 4 age categories and Thanet Roadrunners AC juniors won 6 of them, including all the girls’ prizes, in a real display of strength in depth in the junior section.  Winning juniors were Ysaballa Wrightson (Girls 13-14 years); Emily Bond (Girls 11-12); Caine Moir (Boys 11-12); Kealy Goldsmith (Girls 9-10); Alex Kavanagh (Boys 9-10) and Beth Williams (Girls 7-8).  In addition to this Emily recorded the fastest time of any junior in the race thus beating boys up to 3 years older than her and Caine was the 2nd fastest runner overall (and fastest boy) just 4 seconds behind her.  These runners were ably supported by other junior racers including Tom Winch, James Bedingfield, Oli Cooper and Piper Mullins.
