Thanet Roadrunners AC at the Transplant Games

Young Thanet Roadrunners AC member Adam Wall is celebrating being selected to represent the UK in Gothenberg, Sweden next June at the World Transplant Games.  He will form part of a 170 strong team, all of whom have had an organ transplant, and is just one of 18 juniors selected.

Adam’s selection came as a result of his performances at the recent British Transplant Games which took place in Bath in August.  The Games are run by Transplant Sport UK and competitors range in age from just 3 years old to 84 years old. Adam was part of the Kings Hospital Children’s Transplant team and was competing in 3 events in the 15-17 age group.  He won silver medals in both the 200m and long jump and missed out on a medal in the 100m by a mere 1/100th of a second.  This was Adam’s 5th Transplant Games: he had previously competed in Bath (twice), Edinburgh, Sheffield and Coventry and already had a collection of 2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals to his name before this year’s successes.

Adam’s transplant took place when he was just 2 ½ years old in relation to a genetic disorder, Alagille’s Syndrome, which can affect multiple organs in some sufferers.  Since then taking part in the Transplant Games has been a great way to meet other children and families who have had organ transplants for varying reasons as well as being great fun to participate in.

Adam and his family would like to emphasise that without the organ donation programme their lives would be very different and such events wouldn’t be possible and as such they would like to thank all donor families for their wonderful gift.  They would also like to thank Derek Sackett and his team at Thanet Roadrunners AC who have trained Adam to reach the standard he has now achieved.
