Roadrunners Win at Cyprus International 4 day Challenge

Three Thanet Roadrunners recently took part in an international athletics festival in Cyprus.  Husband and Wife, Michael and Pam Philpot together with Glyn Jenkins attended the Cyprus International 4 day Athletics Challenge.  The festival, currently celebrating its 10th Anniversary is a mini style tour de France stage race for runners, devised by a former local legend, and 1983 London Marathon Winner Mike Gratton.

The festival involved four stages which involved:

Stage 1 - 6k Time Trial

Michael said, ‘runners set of in race number order, at 10 second intervals.  Pam made a cracking start and finished 8th in her category. I unfortunately found myself in 1st place with over an overall 1 minute lead…which is huge in athletic terms.’

Stage 2. The Infamous 11k Mountain trail run (from sea level to mountain top finish)

Michael said, ‘Glyn had warned us of the severity of this course, and conditions this year were made more interesting following heavy thunder storms the night before, making some of the some sections impassable for the 4x4  support vehicles.’

‘At the finish Pam was still in 8th place.   On a day that expected to move to where I belong at the back of the field, I still finished the stage 2nd and still in 1st place overall.

Stage 3.  Half marathon

Michael said, ‘The half marathon was made more interesting with wet conditions.   Another straight climb from the start which eased at about 9.5 kilometres. The harder part of the course was when we reached the summit and it was virtually downhill to the end. The worst section was about 8 km of steep rocky and slippery descents which made it somewhat interesting.’

‘At the end of another Day Pam had a cracking run to move her up to 6th.  I had luckily finished again 2nd on the stage. I had held all but one off, not holding anything back. Losing just 16 seconds on the stage, and now 10 seconds overall behind the new leader.’

Stage 4.   10k road race around Paphos.

Michael said, ‘Glyn had entered this, so we had three Thanet Roadrunners on the start line.  Pam had a very good run with a time of 53 mins and 17 secs finishing 7th in her category and 116th overall.  With just 10 seconds to catch up, it would be really stupid to go out any harder than I needed too. So I went off as hard as I could from the gun, and regained a lead of 1 minute and 39 seconds by the finish.’

‘I finished first in my age category and 43rd overall.  Our Guru Glyn finished the 10K in second place in the over 70 category.’

‘A great holiday and athletic experience. ‘
