Thanet Roadrunners Excel at the London Marathon 2015

The London Marathon 2015 saw over 37,800 runners from all parts of the globe converge on Blackheath to take part in this annual athletic spectacle.  The event which takes in historic landmarks such at the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, Tower of London finishing at the Mall near Buckingham Palace saw an estimated 750,000 spectators lining the streets of the capital to help cheer on the runners.  The event, this year was notable because it saw World record holder Paula Radcliffe, 41, participate in her final competitive marathon in a time of 2:36:55.

The event also saw a number of celebrities taking part including Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans, TV presenter Jenni Falconer, Formula One driver Jenson Button, Radio 1 DJ Greg James, double Olympic gold medallist rower James Cracknell, fashion designer Henry Holland and Made In Chelsea star Oliver Proudlock. However the main focus of the London Marathon were the Legions of fun-runners taking part in the event raising thousands of pounds for charity. This year was no different – there were some truly spectacular efforts among the runners.

Conditions were reasonably good for the runners, with patchy rain and mild temperatures on a gloomy day in the capital.  Among them was  a large contingent of Thanet Roadrunners, cheered on by friends and family.

A number of the club were running for charity, raising thousands of pounds in the process.  They included Michelle Foreman running for 'The Aspinall Foundation',  Claire Rodd for 'Hospice UK', Sue Thomas running for 'Bradstow school', Julia Hermitage for 'Brain Tumour Research', Pam Philpot running for Sense, Tanya Edwards for 'Pilgrims Hospices'  and Lorrain Powderham running for MNDA.

There were some amazing achievements by the roadrunners with each of them achieving personal athletic goals.  The stand our performance was Shaun Mason who ran the 26.2 mile course in well under 3 hours in 02:52:13 with Chris Brenchley close behind, dead on the 3 hour mark.

Shaun Mason said, 'It was an amazing experience and a proud day running in the Thanet Roadrunners vest.  All of the roadrunners were superb as was my wife, my boys and all of the on course supporters.  I was really pleased with an 11 minute Personal Best of 2:52:13 and the bonus of edging Jenson Button in a sprint finish.'

Christopher Brenchley, who was close behind Shaun said, 'I had a great day representing Thanet Roadrunners AC in the London Marathon. I had great support from my family and fellow club members in the crowds.'

Steve Clarke, Thanet Roadrunners AC Chairman, said, 'On behalf of the club I would like to say a very big well done to all the Roadrunners who completed the London Marathon yesterday. Whether it was under 3 over 5 hrs or somewhere in between, we are proud of every one of you.'
