Thanet Roadrunners AC at the London Marathon 2014

If anything was to go by, beginning the journey to the London Marathon with a rendition of the Proclaimers hit, ‘500 miles’ by marathon karaoke man, Graham Burns was an indication that this year’s event was going to be a memorable one for the Thanet Roadrunners.

The London Marathon 2014 saw over 35,000 runners from all parts of the globe converge on Blackheath to take part in this athletic spectacle.  The event which took in historic landmarks such at the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, Tower of London finishing at the Mall near Buckingham Palace saw Double Olympic champion Mo Farah making his marathon debut. Unfortunately, Mo missed out on his bid to win the London Marathon 2014, finishing in eighth place and missing out on breaking the British record.

However the main focus of the London Marathon were the Legions of fun-runners taking part in the event raising thousands of pounds for charity.

Highlights of the event for the club included husband and wife Jon and Jo Holl who ran for the Alzheimer’s Society, mother and daughter, Hannah and Sue Thomas running the race together (and being caught on Television when Denise Lewis was interviewing on Tower Bridge).

Christopher Brenchley was the first Thanet Roadrunner home achieving a (good for age) marathon time of 3 hours 13 minutes 34 seconds.   Chris said, ‘I started quite cautiously but soon settled into my chosen pace, albeit having to overtake thousands of runners and overtook the 3:15 flag not really knowing if he had started way before me. I really enjoyed the crowd’s this year bigger than ever in their masses to see our own MO in the elite field, and took in the sites waving at the cameras and hi fives to the kids.’

Among the Thanet runners running for charity included Shelley Rowe who ran for the ‘Garden Gate Project’ based in Northdown Park, Kerry Jakovljevic who ran for ‘Spinal Research’, Kelly Masters who ran for ‘Children with Cancer UK’, Rick Ryder who ran for ‘Demelza Children's Hospice’, Ian Lockyer who ran for ‘The British Heart Foundation’, Chris Brenchley who ran for ‘Breast Cancer Care’, Claire Wild who ran for ‘Bliss’, Jon and Jo Holl who ran for the ‘Alzheimer’s Society’ and Michael Philpot who ran for ‘Sense’.

Michael Philpot said,’ Sunday's London Marathon was a great day out, and I just relaxed and enjoyed the fantastic atmosphere of the event. It was an uplifting experience, and still eventually finished in a time of 3 hours and 32 minutes.  I would like to give a big thankyou to those who have been part of our collective effort in raising around £1,500 for the Charity Sense.  It has been a privilege and honour to run on behalf of you all. ’

Ian Lockyer said,’ standing at the start line in Blackheath among all the runners, you could help yourself thinking that most of the running vests featured a charity.  Virtually everyone running this race was running for the benefit of others….you could just feel the love.'

The Thanet contingent was also made up of supporters from the club who were to man the water station at the 25 mile point on the Embankment.   As well as providing support and water to the runners, the club members created an important emotional cheering point for all their fellow club members.

Ian Lockyer of Thanet Roadrunners said, ‘the weather on the day was superb, support of the all the Londoners was amazing.  It was fantastic to see our friends at the 25 mile point.  That was very emotional, brought a tear to all our eyes.’
