Young Thanet Modern Pentathlete becomes another recipient of sponsorship from Thanet Roadrunners AC

Rising Thanet Pentathlete, Ben Pond has become another recipient of sponsorship from Thanet Roadrunners AC junior bursary fund.  Since he won the British biathlon championships last year, Ben has been part of the World Class talent program for Pentathlon and will be using the sponsorship to help with the travel costs to Gloucester for training each month.

Modern Pentathlon comprises of 5 separate sports; Swimming, Running, Shooting, Fencing and horse riding. These are done over a single day through a points system. This is a mentally and physically tough challenge and Ben trains over 20 hours a week in order to compete at this high level.

Ben is now 17 years old and in the final year of school.  His sporting journey began around 10 years ago for Thanet swim club and at the age of 9 became Kent champion.  Then 4 years ago he started taking part in biathlons (a separate swim and run.) At the same time he joined Thanet roadrunners AC on a Thursday to improve his running.

Ben’s greatest sporting achievement so far was placing 7th in the Youth Olympic qualifiers for Pentathlon, narrowly missing out on the qualification for the next round.   He aims to maintain this success and compete on the world cup circuit at senior level and also compete in the Olympics.

Asked how important the grant has been and will be? Bens said, ‘The grant will be very important as it will mean I can continue to attend these training camps and improve my skills further.  I would like to thank the committee for the money that they have given me and it will be a great help for my future training.’

He added, ‘If everything goes to plan I hope to attend Bath University and do a sports degree next year. I hope to also carry on with my training at bath as well’.

Over the past 3 years Thanet Roadrunners AC have been granting bursaries to promising athletes from all sporting disciplines from across the island.  The purpose of the funding is to assist these potential sports stars of the future with equipment or finance for training camps.
