OVER-EXERCISING CAN SPEED YOU TO THE ‘FINISH LINE OF LIFE’

Although a regular dose of physical activity can add years to your life, experts have revealed that it is possible to “overdo” it.
They say exercising too far, too fast and for too long speeds your progress to the “finish line of life”.
And they warn that vigorous exercise should be limited to a daily dose of just 30 to 50 minutes.
US cardiologists reviewed studies on the health of runners and found that while moderate exercise like jogging is good for you, too much is bad for the heart.
Intense exercise for more than an hour can cause the heart tissue to stretch, tear and scar, raising the chance of dangerous changes in the organ’s rhythm.
In the journal Heart, doctors James O’Keefe and Carl Lavie, who are both keen runners, said: “A routine of moderate physical activity will add life to your years, as well as years to your life.

“In contrast, running too fast, too far and for too many years may speed one’s progress towards the finish line of life.”
They advise that people who want to exercise at full speed should limit themselves to 30 to 50 minutes a day.
In their opinion, marathon runners should view the feat as something to do occasionally or once in a lifetime, rather than regularly.
The editorial by Dr O’Keefe, of Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, and Dr Lavie, of the John Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute in New Orleans, concluded: “The unique and potent effects of exercise are best bestowed by moderate physical activity.”
