Dover Half Marathon and Veteran Action

The late May Bank Holiday saw the 2ndattempt to get the 2010 edition of the Dover Half Marathon off the ground following its cancellation back in February due to snow and black ice on large sections of the course.

The change of date necessitated a complete change of venue, the creation, mapping and measuring of a brand new course and quite a lot of extra work for the host club Deal Tri who, however, lived up to their usual standards and put on a very good race.

Conditions on the day were ideal for running being cool and overcast although the blustery wind made conditions difficult in one or two places and the course was described by many finishers as having been distinctly hilly!!

First Thanet Roadrunner home on this occasion was David Hall who showed he had recovered from his exertions at the London Marathon by coming home in  1 hr 30 mins 48 seconds which gave him an excellent 15thplace finish overall.  First Thanet lady home was Club Ladies Captain, Barbara Gambrill, whose time of 1:52:53 gained her a top half finish in the overall field.

Known Thanet Roadrunner Finishers:

D Hall 1:30:48; A Waters 1:34:19; S King 1:39:49; M Calothis 1:45:04; S Jones 1:48:13; S Clarke 1:49:40; C Stokes 1:53:11; B Gambrill 1:52:53; E Kearney 1:57:32; K Daniels 2:06:21; T Van de Merwe 2:07:00; J Jobson 2:10:12; B Wright 2:13:15; I Lockyer 2:15:58.

As a footnote although many TRAC runners are now turning their thoughts and training to the traditional slightly shorter distances of the summer races, some have still been working hard at the marathon distance.  At the start of May Glyn Jenkins competed in the National Vets Marathon Championships in Fort William, Scotland on a hot and windy day over a very hilly course but managed a highly creditable 3rdplace in the over 60s category.  He then followed this up with a 2ndplace in the vet (over) 60s category in the South of England Vet Championships over 10K.
