Thanet Roadrunners go Spring Marathon Mad

It’s April and the marathon season is now full upon us with many Thanet Roadrunners hitting their first target races of the year, racing both in Britain and abroad.

First marathon of the year featuring Thanet Roadrunners AC saw 3 members heading across the channel to participate in the Paris Marathon on 11thApril – one of the well-established spring big city marathons and one that has been popular with club members in previous years.  First TRAC member home was Bob Wild who benefited from running a perfectly even-paced race which saw him run both halves in the same time to finish with an overall time of 3 hours 40 minutes and 58 seconds.  Just under a minute behind him was Steve King (3:41:39) who had gone through half way some 6 minutes ahead of Bob but then slowed in the 2ndhalf.  New member Becky Austin recorded an overall time of 4:46:48 having gone through half way in a comfortable 2:16:11 and also raised funds for the British Heart Foundation with her efforts.

The following weekend saw the inaugural running of the Brighton Marathon and the club was well represented by Tracey-Anne Van de Merwe, Adrian Waters and Karen Daniels all running, with Karen also aiming to raise money for Alzheimers. Like Bob the previous week, Karen ran the near perfect race with a negative split to come in at 4:22:54. By contrast Adrian clearly suffered badly in the 2ndhalf running it nearly 40 minutes slower than the first half but still managed to get home in 4:02:15 to claim the honours of 1stTRAC runner.  Tracey-Anne ran a good solid race in her 1stmarathon to finish in 4:50:33 to round off the Thanet runners having gone through half way in 2:17:08 giving her race a similar profile to club member Becky’s the previous week in Paris.

This brings us now to the next couple of marathons to come.  On 3rdMay, Sarah Foster and Des Wiese are running the Belfast marathon in aid of Marie Curie ( -a first marathon for Des although Sarah has previously completed the Beachy Head marathon – and are aiming to finish in under 4 hours.

And of course finally this weekend coming there is the London Marathon which sees a large number of the club descending on the capital both as runners and supporters.  Some TRAC runners are old friends of the London Marathon having run it many times before whilst others are having their first bite of the cherry.  Some of them are also aiming to raise money for charity by their efforts and in addition to this club members also help man one of the water stations along the route.

Thanet Roadrunners AC competitors include: Sharon and Mark Foster (Help for Heroes); Julia Hermitage (Pilgrims Hospice);  Lorraine Fairbard (Bowel Cancer UK); Lou Allen (Antenatal Results & Choices); Debbie Hatt (Children with Leukaemia); David Hall (RSPCA); Daniel Wright (Kent Kids in Canterbury); Darren Baker (Sport Relief); Barbara Gambrill; Nigel Ross-Kent; Claire Green; Symon Barkway; Matt Hall; Phil Kinnill; Mark Ashmore and Nigel Cook.

We wish them all the very best of luck!
