Road Relay Glory

The 2010 East Kent road relay series drew to a close in Canterbury last week with Thanet Roadrunners making a very strong showing finishing on the podium in 4 of the 7 categories.  On a perfect evening for running, TRAC fielded teams in all the age / gender categories and some stunning times were recorded on a course which is essentially downhill on the way out and therefore, unfortunately, uphill on the way back.  This was the final leg following on from races held at Folkestone, Minnis Bay, Ashford and Deal and was as always highly popular with the local running clubs with between 150 and 200 club members from 8 clubs turning out for each race with some guest clubs racing some fixtures too.

The best Thanet result of the series belonged to the Men’s Vet60 team of Brian Snead, Terry Brightwell and Glyn Jenkins who won their category comfortably taking victory in 3 of the 4 races they took part in, not requiring the 1strace of the series at Folkestone, where unfortunately a team was not available to run, in order to seal victory in the series overall.

The Men’s Senior team fielded various 4-man combinations from a pool of 8 (Aboura Mahieddiene, Abdi Madar, Daniel Green, Daniel Wright, David Hall, Nigel Cook, Alex Horsley and Phil Kinnill) in order to mount a challenge which gained them 2ndplace overall in a highly competitive category, just missing out to Folkestone AC for the title at the last gasp.

The Men’s V50 team became known as “The Steve Team” as apart from Graham Pick the other 4 men who raced over the series in this team all go by the name of Steve – namely Jones, Clarke, Suttle and Adelsberg!   The Steves & Graham managed a creditable overall 3rdplace in their category with a 2ndplace finish on home territory at Minnis Bay for the 2ndleg being their best race of the series.

Flying the flag for the ladies was the Senior Ladies team who finished on the podium for the series – tied on points with Canterbury Harriers and at the time of writing waiting for confirmation as to a 2ndor 3rdplace overall based on count back.  This team consisted mainly of Genevieve Holden, Julia Hermitage and Anna Gillatt with able support from Tracy-Anne van de Merwe and Sally Mumford on a couple of races.
