March Hares

As the winter cross country scene draws to a close attention moves to the road racing scene and this, together with the improved weather and the no-longer distant prospect of the London, Brighton and other spring marathons, has seen a number of Thanet Roadrunners out in the spring race scene entering a wide variety of local and national events.

The half marathon was the distance most favoured with Thanet runners represented at Lydd, Silverstone, Hastings and Fleet over the last few weeks. The highlights were David Hall’s 1 hour 29 minutes at Lydd and Adrian Waters’ 1 hour 32 mins at Hastings. Lee Shutler limped home at Fleet in 1 hour 40 minutes while both Steve King and Mark Ashmore put in strong 8 minute-mile performances at Hastings.

Hastings was also the venue for Darren Baker’s new personal best, breaking 2 hours for a strong finish in 1.57 while Ian Lockyer entered his first half marathon at the racetrack at Silverstone – producing a 4 star debut performance.

Following on from the Thanet 20 at which many TRAC members laid down good early season times, Tracey Anne van de Merwe went for a repeat and completed the hilly Oakley 20 mile race in Bedfordshire in 3 hours 30 minutes whilst Mark Ashmore did some speed work at the Sevenoaks 10k race, finishing in the top quarter in 49 minutes.
